Farbe Sprache: Onomatopoeia

Language is the reflection of ourselves. While the linguistic roots might be different, we are connected more than we know through their similarities. I’ve always loved the concept of Jananese onomatopoeia, which represent sounds that humans, animals, and nature make in addition to feelings or states of being. I was interested in whether or not onomatopoeia exists in other languages as well, and happily discovered during my studies that in German, it’s known as “die Onomatopoesie.” It’s also referred to as “die Klangnachahmung,” which means sound imitation, or “die Lautmalerei,” which can be translated to the idea of being loud or with sounds.

My new series “Farbe Sprache: Onomatopoeia” is my way of using Japanese, German, and English in a playful way to show and strengthen those connections visually with typography.
